Welcome to NewEnglandGrown, a new webzine devoted to New England agriculture and food.

To many who live in New England, local food means a summer lobster, a stop at a roadside stand for corn in August, and a trip to the pick-your-own orchard for apples in fall. But there is so much more to New England than that. New England farmers grow apples, potatoes, tomatoes, corn and strawberries, it’s true – but they also grow okra, Jamaican spinach and bok choi, and raise pork, buffalo and deer meat. You can buy mushrooms, seaweed and sea salt from Maine, flint cornmeal from Rhode Island, hard cider from Massachusetts, cheese and yogurt from Vermont, vodka from New Hampshire, and wine from Connecticut. And New England farming isn’t just about food. Fiber farmers raise sheep and alpacas; llama farmers provide trekking animals. Local nurseries grow heritage plants and seeds; Christmas tree farmers sell evergreens and wreaths.

By support local agriculture and food production, you can help to preserve open space, which in turns preserves biodiversity by providing habitats for birds, insects and animals.  Open space also keeps the beauty and character of New England alive, making our towns more lovely places to live.  Less fossil fuel is burned when food and goods are utilized locally, rather than being shipped vast distances.  And strong local family farms help to build a strong local economy.  When you buy from local farms, everyone wins.

Here at NewEnglandGrown, we are captivated by the richness and diversity of New England food and farming.  We want to share our enthusiasm with our fellow New Englanders.  Each month, we will bring you articles, recipes, and interviews about some facet of New England farming, as well as a listing of upcoming events of interest like festivals, open farm days, country fairs, and agricultural workshops.  We will also offer directories of resources for both farm patrons and farmers, to help make connections between farmers and their customers.
